Stop the 2040 Climate Illusion

Brussels, 24/07/2025 - Patriots for Europe firmly rejects the European Commission’s proposal for a new, legally binding climate target for 2040. In the current context of war, economic uncertainty and migration pressures, the 90% emissions reduction target is not a realistic plan — it’s an ideological experiment that threatens European industry, jobs, and welfare.

The EU’s recent climate strategy — through the Green Deal, Climate Law and Fit for 55 — has already caused job losses, bankruptcies, and industry relocation, particularly in energy-intensive sectors. No other major economy has adopted comparable 2040 targets, and the EU risks weakening its economy while others advance competitively.

Europe must prioritize security, energy affordability, and economic resilience. A strong economy with robust industry is key to funding defence, tackling migration, and preserving public services. The EU cannot afford massive spending on climate measures while cutting other vital areas.

The Green Deal has failed to deliver tech superiority — see the car industry or AI. Instead, it has led to higher energy costs, fewer jobs, and increased dependence on third-country imports.

Climate policy must serve people, not ideology. Sustainability must preserve both ecosystems and prosperity for future generations. We must recover competitiveness, innovation, and pragmatism, especially in energy policy — balancing security of supply, price stability and environmental protection.
