Patriots Summit: A Call for Radical Change in Brussels and Defense of National Sovereignty
Brussels 21/03/2025 - The Patriots Summit was an excellent opportunity for the leaders of the Patriots member parties as well as the leadership of the Patriots for Europe group to coordinate positions and strengthen their alliance before the EU summit at a crucial time for Europe. Our party family, as well as our group in the European Parliament, is becoming stronger, more organized and united than ever.
We, Patriots, believe that peace is needed in Ukraine as soon as possible and that the EU must change its strategy regarding the war. We agree with increasing Europe's defense capabilities, but we emphasize respect for national competences and reject the Commission's federalist proposals and further centralization. We demand radical change in the failed Brussels migration policy, a revision of the Green Deal and urgent steps to save European industry, reduce energy prices and improve competitiveness.
The Patriots are the only real opposition force in Brussels, standing up to the ever-worse decisions of the Ursula von der Leyen Commission, representing common sense and resisting the centralizing efforts of the Brussels bureaucracy. We will continue to work to promote the security and well-being of our citizens.
Patriots for Europe Group on European Council conclusions
The Patriots for Europe Group in the European Parliament underlines that defense is and must remain a matter of national sovereignty.
Therefore, we do not support the European Commission’s attempt to centralize defense policy.
After three years of bloodshed and destruction, as a consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, peace should be the priority. We welcome every step taken in the direction of a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine.
We also raise urgent concerns over the future of Europe’s automotive sector, calling for a revision of the 2035 deadline for the phase-out of combustion engine vehicles. The timeline must be adjusted, and the industry must not face penalties if intermediate targets from 2025 cannot be met.
Finally, we welcome the discussions on establishing external return hubs for immigrants, but we stress that Europe’s immigration system needs a profound reform. The Budapest Declaration provides the framework for such reform and must guide the EU’s response. We are committed to defending Europe’s borders, stopping illegal immigration, and ensuring that Member States retain full control over their immigration policies.
