Patriots for Europe Break the “Cordon Sanitaire” With Decisive Victory for SMEs and Scale-ups

Brussels, 24/09/2025 - Patriots for Europe have successfully broken the so-called “cordon sanitaire” in the European Parliament. The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) has approved the report led by Spanish MEP Jorge Martín Frías, securing a comfortable majority of 35 votes in favour, 20 against, and 3 abstentions.

The report represents a turning point for Europe’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and scale-ups, which for too long have been strangled by excessive bureaucracy and disproportionate burdens – many linked to the European Green Deal. By opening new avenues of financing, simplifying regulations, and ensuring fairer conditions across Member States, the proposal delivers real solutions to unleash Europe’s entrepreneurial potential.

This victory proves that a strong alternative to the old coalition of socialists and conservatives exists. For the first time, the European Parliament’s economic committee has recognised that SMEs must be freed from unnecessary Green Deal obligations, empowering them to grow, create jobs, and drive prosperity for all Europeans.

It also shows that Patriots for Europe are capable of building what has been called the “Venezuela Majority” – an alternative alliance that breaks the establishment’s monopoly. However, this majority is not yet permanent, as the European People’s Party (EPP) refuses to consolidate it and continues to cling to the socialist-green status quo.

“Europe cannot afford to remain the continent of bureaucracy and stagnation. With this vote, we open the door to a Europe of growth, innovation, and freedom for our businesses,” said Jorge Martín Frías.

With this milestone, Patriots for Europe demonstrate once again that they are firmly on the side of European citizens, families, and entrepreneurs – putting people’s prosperity above political dogmas.
