Historic Victory Of The Patriots For Europe On European Migration Policy

Strasbourg, 18/12/2025 - Last night, our group, Patriots for Europe, enabled the adoption in trilogue of the text on the “safe third country concept”. This legislation allows asylum seekers to be returned to safe countries outside the EU without having to examine their asylum applications.

This is a major instrument for protecting Europe’s borders and reducing the unbearable pressure of unfounded asylum claims weighing on our Member States. Its adoption was made possible by the historic breaking of the cordon sanitaire and the formation of a majority with the EPP, ECR and ESN groups.

With this legislation, Member States will be able to determine more easily that a non-EU country is safe for an asylum seeker and to transfer them there immediately. The EU and the Member States will be able to conclude agreements with safe third countries in which asylum applications will be examined. An appeal against a decision rejecting an asylum application will no longer automatically prevent the applicant’s transfer outside the EU.

The adoption of this text constitutes a strategic defeat for the Migration Pact and a major political success for the control of Europe’s borders.
