Enough Is Enough: Patriots for Europe Files Motion of Censure Over EU-Mercosur Agreement

Brussels, 14/01/2026 - The Patriots for Europe Group has tabled a motion of censure against the European Commission, demanding accountability for the unilateral conclusion of the EU-Mercosur Agreement in flagrant disregard of the European Parliament, national parliaments, and millions of European farmers.

The EU-Mercosur deal constitutes a direct attack on European food security and food sovereignty. It opens our markets to products that do not meet European environmental, sanitary, and animal welfare standards, exposing farmers and rural communities to unfair competition from imports produced under conditions that would be illegal in Europe. The so-called safeguard clauses proposed by the Commission offer no real protection and fail to guarantee genuine reciprocity of standards.

The Commission has systematically circumvented democratic scrutiny by splitting the agreement into two separate legal instruments specifically designed to bypass national ratification procedures. This institutional manoeuvre reduces parliamentary oversight to a mere formality and disregards the legitimate concerns repeatedly expressed by Member States.

Patriots for Europe believes that European trade policy must be built on genuine reciprocity, effective mirror clauses, and real protection for our agricultural sector. We call on all political groups committed to defending European farmers, food sovereignty, and democratic accountability to support this motion of censure.
