A Broken Commission: Patriots for Europe Launches Much-Needed Censure Motion Against von der Leyen
Strasbourg, 10/09/2025 - Patriots for Europe announced today that it will table a long-awaited Motion of Censure against the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. Europe cannot continue under a Commission that has failed on trade, abandoned transparency, and rejected accountability.
The announcement was made at a press conference where President Jordan Bardella and First Vice-President Kinga Gál, joined by members of the Patriots for Europe bureau, presented the reasons behind the motion.
“Our Group is speaking on behalf of the millions of people who rightly believe that your Commission no longer defends Europe,” said Jordan Bardella. “This Commission is failing in every area. The Patriots Group is therefore tabling a Motion of Censure, which will provide clarity in October: who still supports Ursula von der Leyen?”
Kinga Gál stated: “This Commission and its President have failed to cope with the most pressing challenges that Europe is facing. They have failed on peace, on trade, on competitiveness, on migration.” She added: “Instead of providing solutions, this Commission has become the problem itself. We need a leadership that finally represents the interests of the European people. It is time for Ursula von der Leyen to go.”
Europe Betrayed on Trade
At the core of this Motion of Censure stands the Commission’s trade policy, which has gravely undermined Europe’s economic strength and strategic autonomy. By pushing through damaging agreements without a proper mandate and against the will of national parliaments, Ursula von der Leyen has betrayed European citizens.
-
Mercosur deal: Signed in December 2024 despite strong opposition from national parliaments, this agreement opens Europe’s markets to products that fail to meet our health, social and environmental standards, putting thousands of European farmers and breeders at risk. Bardella stressed: “The Mercosur agreement is a triple betrayal: of our farmers, our consumers, and the environment. It increases imports from the other side of the world, produced under practices that do not respect our rules.”
-
EU–US trade framework: Concluded without a mandate from the Council, in blatant violation of the Treaties, this deal threatens entire sectors of our economy with asymmetric concessions and dangerous dependencies. Bardella underlined: “The agreement signed this summer between the European Union and the United States is not a trade deal. It is a political setback, a capitulation.”
These failures in trade are compounded by a broader record of mismanagement and opacity. From Pfizergate to serious concerns over EU funds channelled to NGOs to promote the failing Green Deal, the Commission has repeatedly eroded accountability and weakened citizens’ trust in the European Union.
Patriots for Europe calls on all Members of the European Parliament to support this Motion of Censure. It is time to end this cycle of failure and restore accountability, sovereignty, and transparency at the heart of the European Union.
